Sichuan Relief Efforts Between May 25 and May 28, a group of volunteers led by Cheung Kong GSB Associate Dean and Sichuan native Xue Yunkui visited Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province, taking urgently needed medicine to the earthquake-hit area.

  Meanwhile, Dean Xiang took part in the Olympic torch relay at Huangshan in Anhui on May 30, having first auctioned his torch for charity.

Asia Society in Tianjin A Cheung Kong GSB delegation attended the 18th Asian Corporate Conference from May 28 -30 in Tianjin . The conference, co-organized by Asia Society and Tianjin Municipal People's Government, featured political and business leaders from China , India , Singapore , Indonesia , Australia , US, and Europe . Professor Zhang Yan from Rice University in Houston, Texas , will be in residence at the Cheung Kong Beijing Campus from June 1-30. A professor of strategy, Dr. Zhang's areas of specialization include CEO succession, corporate governance, global strategic alliances, and multinational companies' operations in emerging markets.

Philosophy for Breakfast Professor Tu Weiming lectured on Identity Politics in Chinese Cultural Spheres, assessing Chinese culture as a multi-layered phenomenon with as much development outside mainland China as within. He urged more coordinated action on the Tibetan issue so as to demonstrate the cultural maturity of China .

 

Shanghai HR Forum Cheung Kong GSB Professor Elizabeth Weldon led a discussion on Making HR Strategic with over 30 Shanghai-based human resource directors from leading global corporations including Philips, GlaxoSmithKline, AIG, and Intel on May 15 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Shanghai .

Forum speakers included Xiaoming Zhang, Director of Sotheby's Chinese Contemporary Art Department in New York , who shared her insights into opportunities and challenges in Chinese Modern Art Investment.

Cheung Kong MBA News

MBA inbound program 25 Carlson School of Management MBA students spent two weeks in Shanghai from 18 May. They worked with 16 Cheung Kong MBAs on a new Polaroid product launch project. Each group completed 100 surveys in shopping malls and universities, collecting valuable first hand data for the project. On May 29, the Vice President of Polaroid, Scott Bayles, came to the Campus to witness the presentations delivered by the mixed teams from Carlson and Cheung Kong.

The four day module kicked off the 2008 Cheung Kong China CEO and Finance CEO programs, and saw synergy created between leaders of fast-growing domestic service industries, financial groups, and world-renowned business school academics.

Alumni News

Zhang Xiangqing, an alumnus of the Cheung Kong China CEO class, contributed RMB 100 million to the government disaster fund during the CCTV earthquake relief show on 18 May. A native of Tangshan city, Zhang Xiangqing lost both parents in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, and explained his special bond with Sichuan earthquake survivors because of his upbringing in the 'phoenix city'. Open to potential Korean MBA applicants, www.freechal.com will host a Cheung Kong video competition on the topic: My China Dream. Videos can be shot using Korean, English or Chinese, or a mix of all three.

A group of 20 Cheung Kong EMBA students will visit the Madrid campus of IE Business School for one week in June, attending classes and company visits, and gaining a feel for the business environment in one of the most vibrant cities of Europe .

New Programs

China Country Manager Program
A new English language program for core management of multinational corporations operating in Asia Pacific and China , the Cheung Kong China Country Manager Program will start on September 18, 2008.

Presidents, CEOs and General Managers will meet for three modules in Beijing , Shanghai and Sanya, gaining comprehensive knowledge of Chinese economic development in the context of emerging markets.
